Entertainment

Entertainment in India dates back to 1912 when R.G. Torney and N.G Chitre made Pundalik the first Indian film. In 1931, Ardeshir Irani produced the first talkie film Alam Ara. In India, films can be released only after they get certification from the Central Board of Film Certification. In 1975, National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) was established to promote good cinema. It’s main aim is to foster the growth of Indian film industry.

Radio and Television also play a crucial role in the Indian Entertainment industry. In 1923, the first radio programme was broadcasted by the Radio Club of Mumbai. Then two private transmitters started operating in Mumbai and Kolkata. In 1927, the Government of India took them over and started its operations under the name of Indian Broadcasting Service. In 1936, its name changed to All India Radio(AIR) and since 1957, it is being known as the Akashvani. AIR has played an important role in bringing an awareness regarding all forms of Indian music such as folk, classical, light, tribal as well as western music. At present AIR has involved many private players who broadcast through FM.

In August 1965, the first general service for television broadcasting started from Delhi. Initially it was linked to AIR but later on in 1976, it was named as Doordarshan (DD). At present DD operates 25 channels. Apart from that there are many private channels including entertainment channels, sports channels, music channels, news channels etc.
